It is not only the Styrian cycling network (the R5 Mürz Valley Cycling Trail and the R2 River Mur Cycling Trail in this case) and the Südbahn (Southern Railway), which travels from Vienna to the Adriatic, that connect Graz and Semmering. The fact that both have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites for several years also links these enticingly beautiful regions of Styria.
The bike ride begins in Mürzzuschlag (our tip: visit the Southern Railway Museum at Mürzzuschlag train station). From here it goes gently downhill through Peter Roseggers Waldheimat (Forest Home) and the Mürz Valley to Kapfenberg and Bruck an der Mur. With its beautiful city centre, this old market town has become a popular excursion destination over the last few years. People enjoy whiling away the time here and it is also the ideal place to spend your first night.
The route continues towards Graz through the narrow Mur Valley at Pernegg an der Mur (our tip: visit the Bärenschütz Gorge, one of Austria's oldest natural monuments). As in the Mürz Valley, a large number of excursion destinations invite your to visit along the way. When you arrive in Graz, Austria's epicurean capital, you will understand why Styria is so often praised for its variety. You can stroll through the beautiful city centre, perhaps also go up to the Schlossberg or visit other sights - it's hard to choose!
You can get back in comfort on the train – you can find further information at Bikes & Trains in Styria.
